Message from Our President |
President’s Message: Laurel Scherr
We have had an incredible summer with lots of sunshine! Our summer began with the 3rd Annual Hope Classic Walk/Run/Wheel Event held with our Family Barbeque in June at the Forestry Farm.
Swimming lessons were offered twice this year, during the fall and winter sessions, and the next session will begin September 11 at 6 pm. We’d love to see more members get involved in this great activity, so please call me if you’d like to participate. We are grateful to the Saskatchewan Lotteries Trust Fund and the City of Saskatoon who approved us for a grant which was used towards the cost of swimming lessons.
In December, our Christmas Party was enjoyed by all in attendance. The event was held at St. Luke’s School with great food, games, visiting and the Silent Auction was a lot of fun! Santa’s visit rounded out the evening. We participated in the Virtual Tree Campaign that SBHAC organized, and they are hoping this will be an annual fundraiser.
In February, the Physiotherapy Department at the Kinsmen Children’s Center offered a “Power Kids on Wheels” day camp during the school break. A few of our members took part, and our Association sponsored a lunch for the group on the last day.
I am excited about the SBHAC 2011 AGM and Conference which will be hosted by the Northern Alberta Association in Edmonton in October, and we will have strong representation from our Association. The program is full of wonderful information and great speakers. Check out the information at www.sbhana.org.
We continue to support the wheelchair dance groups, wheelchair basketball teams, disabled ski group, day programs, camps and the new wheelchair curling program. We are fortunate to have so many programs available to us, and invite everyone to get involved and share their information. Saskatchewan Wheelchair Sports Association is hoping to get an active sledge hockey group going in or near Saskatoon, as well as one in Regina, so that will be exciting. We work closely with SWSA to get information about their programs, and I attended their AGM in Regina this spring. Our newsletter as well as our website are very useful tools to keep everyone informed, and we invite all members to make submissions.
I would love to hear from our members if they have ideas for our Association or would like to get more involved. I’d also like to see some new families get involved with our Association and have been in discussions with the staff at the Kinsmen Children’s Centre to gather ideas on how we can achieve this.
In closing, I’d like to thank Shawn Scherr, our bingo captain, for his efforts. Our bingo revenues support all the programs and activities that we provide, as well as funding for families. Thanks to all the Board Members, Cinnamon, Shelley, Gene, Linda, Jackie, and Brenda who serve our members. Special thanks to Bev Turgeon for her work on the newsletter and to Dave Elder for maintaining our website.
Our Thoughts and Prayers are with you! |

Bingo Report |
We will start our Bingo Report with many thanks to those members who do their best to come and work when asked. SBHAS-N is scheduled once or twice a month from 12 – 6 pm at Club West Bingo hall located at 15 Worobetz Place in Saskatoon. It is a Come-and-Go format, which allows volunteers to work shorter shifts if required. The Teen Program has helped us with workers as well. The teens gain work experience to add to their resumé, and bingo players really enjoy seeing the teens out working for their charity. Keep up the good work! We are struggling at times to put a full team of bingo workers together and have been forced to hire. Please let me know if you’re interested in working any bingos. I will be emailing out a list of upcoming bingo dates so if you can help out please call me (Shawn) at 249-1362. Once again, thanks to all of you who do your part in our fundraising. If you enjoy the programs offered by our Association, please try to come out and work a bingo this year. Submitted by |
June – Spina Bifida Month – Hope Classic/BBQ |
The North Chapter of the Spina Bifida Association of Saskatchewan celebrated Spina Bifida Month with a couple activities. At the June 1st Spinal Cord Clinic our Association provided treats and a “thank you” bouquet to our Spinal Cord team at the Kinsmen Children Centre. The combined annual June BBQ and Hope Classic were held at the Forestry Farm on June 11th. There was a great turnout, everyone enjoyed the scenic walk around the park and the excellent culinary talents of Master BBQ’er Shawn Scherr. A fun time was had by all!! |
